Designer Lighting Favorites

Lighting is the cheapest thing that changes a room and the last thing most people touch.

I can walk into a house with excellent furniture and know within ten seconds that the lighting was never planned — because there is one fixture in the middle of every ceiling, every bulb is a different color, and the whole place looks like it is waiting for something.

Three fixes carry nearly all of the improvement. First, get light off the ceiling and down to eye level. Second, put everything on a dimmer. Third, standardize color temperature so a house reads as one house.

That last one costs about sixty dollars a room and I have never seen anyone regret it.

This edit is organized by the three layers I specify in every project: ambient light that fills the room, task light you work under, and accent light that gives the room depth after dark. Each slot carries the mounting height, the Kelvin, and the lumen output — because a fixture’s beauty is irrelevant if it is hung eight inches too low or fitted with the wrong bulb.
