Amazon Home Essentials

I use Amazon the way I use a hardware store. It is excellent for things with a specification and a part number, and unreliable for anything where the material, the finish, or the scale is the point.

That distinction is the entire collection.

Bulbs, felt pads, cable management, dimmers, rug pads, hooks, storage bins, picture-hanging hardware, cleaning supplies for specific finishes — these are commodity items with published specs, delivered in two days, at prices that are hard to beat. I buy them there without hesitation and so should you.

Furniture, rugs, lighting fixtures, and art are a different matter. Photography is unreliable, dimensions in listings are frequently wrong, and the same product appears under six different brand names at four different prices. The failure rate is high enough that the savings evaporate in returns.

So this list is deliberately narrow. Every slot here is something with a number attached — a size, a rating, a material spec — that you can verify before it ships.
