Hospitality is not expense. It is anticipation — noticing in advance the ten small frictions a guest will otherwise absorb silently. Where do I put the suitcase. Where do I hang a dress. Is there somewhere to set a glass of water. Can I turn the light off without getting up. Is there a mirror I can actually use.

Most guest rooms are furnished with what the household no longer wants, which means they are a collection of previous decisions rather than a room designed for anyone. That is why they feel like storage with a bed in it.
