A room can have every large decision right and still look unfinished. The sofa is good, the rug is the correct size, the lighting is warm. And something is missing, and nobody can name it.
What is missing is the last ten percent: art at the right height, objects with weight, shelves that are styled rather than filled, and a lamp that lights something worth looking at.
This is the layer people postpone indefinitely, usually because it feels frivolous next to a sofa. It is the opposite of frivolous. It is the layer that makes everything already purchased look deliberate.
It is also the layer with the most rules — and they are real rules, not preferences. Centers at 57 to 60 inches. Bottom edges 6 to 10 inches above furniture. Two to three inches between frames. Mats at least 2 inches wide. These numbers come from gallery practice, and they work because they align art with the average adult sightline.
Get them right and inexpensive art looks considered. Get them wrong and a valuable piece looks like it was hung by someone in a hurry.
